Most people would agree that teenagers can be very particular about certain things: clothes, food, friends and their personal space, which includes their bedroom. When planning the decor of their room, teen bedding is an important part of the overall look. Pattern, color, style, budget and comfort all need to be considered. Teens should take part in the design process; after all, their bedroom is their oasis and a place to call their own.

The entire ensemble is actually made up of several different pieces. Comforters, blankets, sheets, pillows, curtains and shams all combine together to create a sophisticated, stylish, comfortable space. Most retail stores offer all of these things separately, so you don't have to buy them all at once if the budget doesn't allow for it. To save even more money, some things, like window treatments, can be hand-made.

Temperatures can vary greatly across the country, so the climate you're in will play a role in what materials you choose. Light cotton sheets will not keep one warm in Oregon or Colorado during the winter months, but will be just fine for those in places like Florida or Tennessee. Cotton, polyester and flannel will have to be chosen based on the climate you live in. Flannel is great for the winter but much too warm for the summer.

Something else to consider when purchasing youth bedding is whether to choose prints or solids when designing the room. This basically comes down to personal preference. Some find prints too brash and bold, while others find solids boring and dull. Whatever style you choose, make sure it complements the other colors in the room. If the walls are hot pink, an orange bedspread may not be a good choice.

A basic guideline when it comes to decorating is to choose colors that give the illusion of a bigger space. Brighter shades can make small spaces look bigger. Don't put too much furniture into small spaces because it will give it a cramped feel that no color will help with the appearance of its size. Bean bag chairs and area rugs can complete a look quite nicely.

Choose bed linens that won't go out of style in the next year or so. Just think of the items you bought for your child that had the latest cartoon characters on them that are now sitting in the back of the closet collecting dust. The ensemble should still be in style when your teen leaves for college.

The first step to design is to sit down with your child and talk about how they want things to look and what they want as an end result. Go to some stores and pick out fabric swatches and color samples. The planning stage can be just as fun as actually doing the work.

Teen bedding may just be one part of a bedroom's look, but it is an important one. It can be the focal point of the whole room and will give your child a sense of accomplishment knowing that they helped decorate and choose the design. Check online to compare colors, styles, prices and fabrics before you make any final decisions on purchasing bedding. They will enjoy their own little oasis and you will enjoy the peace and quiet in the rest of your home.
